How to Make a Flyer on iPhone

Make a flyer on your iPhone: what to put on it, how to add tear-off phone tabs, which paper size to pick, and how to print it at real size or share it.

Made for this: Flyer Cat

A yard sale on Saturday, a lost cat, a bake sale, a room for rent: some news still travels best on paper, taped to a pole or pinned to a board. You can make that flyer on your iPhone and print it at home. This guide covers what goes on a good flyer, tear-off tabs and paper sizes, then how to make one with Flyer Cat, our flyer maker for iPhone.

What goes on a flyer

People read a flyer in a few seconds, so keep it short:

  • One big headline that says what it is, readable from across the street: YARD SALE, LOST DOG, NOW HIRING.
  • The few facts people need: what, when (date and time), where (an address or a place) and how to reach you.
  • One photo, if it helps: the pet, the item, the house. One clear photo does more than several small ones.
  • Nothing else. Every extra line makes the important ones smaller.

Tear-off tabs

Tear-off tabs are the strips along the bottom, each with your phone number, so people can take it with them. Put two short lines on each tab: what it's about ("Yard sale") and the number. Cut between the tabs up to the fold, not all the way. Check the number before you print a stack.

Pick the right size

  • US and Canada: Letter (8.5 × 11 in) for most flyers, Tabloid (11 × 17 in) for a poster.
  • Most other places: A4 (210 × 297 mm), or A3 (297 × 420 mm) for a poster.
  • Handouts: Half letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) or A5 (148 × 210 mm). Two fit on one Letter or A4 sheet, so one page makes two flyers.

Design at the size you'll print on; a flyer stretched to another size looks squashed or loses its edges.

Make the flyer in Flyer Cat

  1. Pick what you're making. Home asks "What are you making?" With Flyers selected, choose a category: yard and garage sales, moving sales, lost pets, found pets, events and parties, open houses and rentals, help wanted, classes and tutoring, church and community, fundraisers and bake sales, menu specials, babysitting and services, concerts and gigs, business promos, and notices. Then pick a design.
  2. Fill in the blanks. There's no blank canvas. You get plain fields with the category's own names: a yard sale asks for a headline, what's for sale, the date, the time and the address; a lost pet asks for the name and breed, where it was last seen and a reward if you offer one. Fields marked Sample still show the design's example words, and those are left off when you print or share, until you type your own.
  3. Add a photo. Under Photo, choose one from your library or take one with the camera. No photo? Tap No photo on this flyer: the frame disappears from the printed flyer and the words get the room.
  4. Change the look if you like. Style, Colour and Size sit next to Text and Photo. Under Size, pick the paper you'll print on.
  5. Turn on tear-off tabs. On a paper size, switch on Tear-off tabs and pick from 4 to 14 tabs. Type the first and second line for every tab; empty lines use your headline and phone number. Tabs only print once your own number is in (in the phone field or the tab's second line), so a tab never carries the design's sample number.

Every change is saved as you type, and everything you make is in My Designs, where you can duplicate a flyer to make the next one.

Tap Print & share. You see the flyer exactly as it will come out, then:

  • Print with AirPrint. Flyer Cat reminds you to choose the matching paper and keep the scale at 100% so it prints at real size, and, if the flyer has tabs, to cut them along the dashed lines up to the fold.
  • Two per sheet for Half letter and A5: one Letter or A4 page, cut along the middle line.
  • Share PDF at the paper size you picked, to email it or take it to a print shop.
  • Share image or Save to Photos to post or text it.

Print at 100% or "Actual size", not "Fit to page". Bright colours use a lot of ink; light designs print faster and cheaper.

Posting it online instead

For a flyer that never touches paper, pick an image size under Size: Instagram post (1080 × 1350 px), Square post (1080 × 1080 px) or Story (1080 × 1920 px). Then share the image or save it to Photos. Flyer Cat also makes party invitations and cards, and you can share an invitation with an Add to Calendar file for your guests.

What it costs

The category designs, invitations, editing, photos, tear-off tabs, every size, Print, the PDF, the image, Save to Photos and My Designs are all free. There's no watermark: nothing is printed on your flyer except what you put there. There are no ads, no sign-up and no account. Flyer Cat Pro is an optional one-time purchase that adds the Seasonal design pack (Halloween, holiday markets, egg hunts, cookouts and New Year's Eve), the Business design pack (openings, opening hours, price lists, gift cards and moves), and a brand kit that puts your saved logo, colours and contact details on any flyer in one tap. More on the Flyer Cat page.

Your photos and words are kept on your device and in your own backups unless you share, save or print them.
