Some plans work better on paper. A page on the fridge, on the desk or in a bag is there without unlocking a phone, and you can tick things off with a pen. This guide covers what goes on a daily and a weekly schedule page, and how to make one from your iPhone or iPad with Planner Cat, our day planner, which prints the day and the week for free.
What goes on a daily schedule page
A useful day page has a few parts:
- The day and the date at the top, so an old page is easy to spot.
- The hours down the side, so you can see the gaps as well as the busy parts.
- Each item at its time, as tall as it is long, with its start and end time.
- A box to tick for each item.
- Room for notes: a call to make, a thing to buy, what got moved.
And on a weekly page
A week page answers a different question: which days are full. Seven columns side by side, on the same hours, show it at a glance. The week can also be a plain list, a day at a time, with a box to tick for each item.
Make the day in Planner Cat
The page prints what's in your plan, so start there. Tap a time on the day page to add a block, give it a name, a start and a length, and tap Add. Give blocks that come back a Repeat, such as Every day or Weekdays, and they fill every day's page and every week page on their own. Repeats are free, with no limit.
For the full walk-through, with moving, stretching and reminders, see how to time block your day on iPhone.
Print or share the day page
- Go to the day you want with the arrows, or tap a day in the week view.
- Tap the printer button at the top right.
- Under the day's name, tap Print day page to open the print panel, or Share day as PDF to save it or send it.
The day page is portrait. At the top is the day's name in large type, with the date under it. Down the left is an hour rail from 6 in the morning to 11 at night, and it stretches to take in any block outside those hours. Every block is drawn to scale with its title, its time and a tick box. A block you ticked done in the app prints with its box filled in. On the right is a column headed NOTES, with lines to write on.
The page is Letter in the US, Canada, Mexico and a few other countries, and A4 everywhere else. There's no watermark, and the app's name isn't on the paper.
Need a blank page to fill in by hand? Pick a day with nothing planned and print it. You get a clean page with the hour rail and the notes lines.
Print or share the week page
In the same printer menu, the second part is named for the week, such as This week. Tap Print week page or Share week as PDF.
The week page is landscape, titled "Week of" with the dates. It has seven columns, starting on the first day of the week set on your iPhone, each headed with the day and the date. Every block is drawn to scale on a shared hour rail, with a tick box.
Both the day and week pages are free.
More pages with Pro
Planner Cat Pro adds two more layouts. Open the ••• menu and look under More print layouts:
- Print the week list or Share the week list as PDF. The week as a list, in portrait. Each day has a heading, and each block is a row with a tick box, its time and its title. A spare line with a tick box follows each day, two on an empty day, to write in. A long week runs onto more pages.
- Print the month or Share the month as PDF. The whole month at a glance, in landscape, with weeks starting on your first weekday. Each day shows its blocks' start times and titles, as many as fit, then "+ 2 more" or however many are left.
Without Pro, the menu shows Week list and month marked Pro.
What Planner Cat doesn't do
- It doesn't let you design the page. Each layout has one look. The day and week pages always show 6 in the morning to 11 at night, and stretch only to fit your blocks.
- It doesn't print your calendar's events, even with Pro. They show beside your blocks in the app only, read-only.
- Ticks on paper stay on paper. To tick a block in the app, tap its circle.
- It doesn't print in your Pro colours. Every block on paper has the same pale fill and dark blue edge.
What it costs
Planner Cat is free for as many blocks and repeats as you like, reminders, the day and week views, and the day and week pages to print or share as a PDF. There's no account and no ads. Your plan is kept on your iPhone or iPad and in your own backups, and leaves only when you print, share or export it.
Planner Cat Pro is an optional one-time purchase that adds the week list and month pages, your calendar's events beside your blocks (read-only), day templates, colours and icons, and export to CSV. More on the Planner Cat page.
