Short answers to the questions people ask most about Mileage Cat. New to it? Start with our guide on how to keep a mileage log.
Do I have to pay? Is there a limit on trips?
No. Logging trips, automatic trips, the amounts at your rate and the PDF and CSV mileage log are free, with no trip limit, no watermark, no ads and no account. Your first vehicle is free too. Mileage Cat Pro is an optional one-time purchase for people who drive more than one car or for several clients: several vehicles with odometer readings, tagging trips by client or project with a report for one tag, and a weekly or monthly report reminder. More on the Mileage Cat page.
Where are my trips? Do I need to sign in?
There's no account and no sign-in. Your trips, routes and places are kept on your device and in your own backups unless you share, save or print them. To keep a copy of your own, use your device backup, or keep the CSV from Reports.
Does it work offline?
Mostly. There's no account, your trips are kept on your device, and the PDF and CSV report are made on your device, so you can log trips and make a report without a connection. Street names for a trip's start and end, and the trip map, come from Apple Maps, which needs a connection. A trip saved without one shows "Finding address…" and gets its names the next time you open Mileage Cat with a connection; a report made before then lists those ends as "Unknown place" with their coordinates. Places you've named yourself, like Home or Office, don't need Apple Maps. Buying or restoring Pro needs the App Store.
Automatic trips aren't being logged. What should I check?
Open More and check that Automatic trips is on; Home then says "Automatic trips on". Mileage Cat needs location set to Always to log trips while the app is closed. When something is in the way, Home shows a message saying what, with an Open Settings button: location off, location not set to Always, Background App Refresh off, Motion & Fitness off, or Precise Location off (distances are rough without it). Under End a trip after a stop of you choose how long a stop can last before a trip ends. You can always tap Start trip yourself, and add a missed trip by hand.
I forgot to start a trip. Can I add it later?
Yes. Tap Add trip on the Trips tab (or + at the top). Type where you went from and to, the distance and the date, and pick Business or Personal. Turn on Round trip and the trip is logged there and back; the line under it shows the total. Tap Save.
A trip is missing from my mileage report. Where did it go?
Check three things. New trips wait under To classify on the Trips tab until you tap Business or Personal (or swipe right for Business, left for Personal), and the report leaves them out until then: Reports says how many "aren't in this report". Personal trips are in a report only when you turn on Include personal trips under More options. And check the Period at the top of Reports: this tax year, last tax year, this month, last month, or any dates with From and To. If you swiped a trip away or classified it on the Trips tab by mistake, tap Undo in the message that appears right after. Delete trip on a trip's own screen asks first, and once you confirm it can't be undone.
The distance or a place name is wrong. How do I fix it?
Open the trip from the Trips tab. Under Distance, type the right figure. On a trip Mileage Cat recorded, the row then says "Corrected distance", your figure is the one used in reports, and the ↺ button next to it goes back to the GPS distance. To fix a place name, tap From or To on a recorded trip and give the place your own name, like Home or Office: every trip that starts or ends within 100 m of it then uses that name. On a trip you added by hand, just type over From or To.
Which mileage rate does it use?
Open More › Rates and pick your country: United States, United Kingdom, Canada (provinces), Canada (territories) or Australia. Each trip uses the published rate for its date (shown as IRS, HMRC, CRA or ATO rates), and each rate period links to its source. If a trip's date has no published rate yet, the latest published rate is used and the trip says so. Somewhere else, or paid at a different rate? Choose Other (my own rates), or type your figure under Use my own rate instead. Mileage Cat isn't tax advice; check with your tax authority or adviser for your situation.
