Short answers to the questions people ask most about Tally Cat. More about the app is on the Tally Cat page.
Is Tally Cat free? What does Pro add?
Yes, it's free. Any number of counters and counts, undo, every tap kept with its time, Past counts, and printing or sharing the count sheet as a PDF or CSV are all free. There's no account and no ads. Tally Cat Pro is an optional one-time purchase that adds two extras: the 15-minute report and the Counter grid. If Pro is ever turned off, for example after a refund, no count is deleted or changed.
How do I start counting?
Open the app and tap the big tile. Each tap counts one. Your first count is called "Count", with one counter, also called "Count". To give the count its own name, tap the name at the top. In Name this count, type a name and tap Save. Your iPhone gives a small haptic tap with each count.
Can I count several things at once?
Yes. Tap Add a counter, type a name, like In or Out, and tap Add. Each counter gets a coloured tile of its own. If you leave the name blank, it's called "Counter 2", "Counter 3" and so on. Press and hold a tile to Rename or Remove it. If a counter has counts, the app asks first, because its counts go with it. There's no limit on counters or counts.
I tapped by mistake. How do I take it back?
Tap the minus in the tile's corner to take one off that counter. A count never goes below zero. Or tap Undo at the top to take back the last tap, whichever counter it was on. You can keep tapping Undo to go further back.
How do I start again at zero?
Tap End this count, then End count. Nothing is deleted. The count is kept in Past counts with its start and end times, and a new count starts with the same counters at zero. To see an old count, tap the clock button at the top (Past counts), then tap the count.
How do I print or share a count?
Tap the share button at the top (Count sheet). You'll see the page before you print it. It shows each counter's count with its first and last tap, the total, and lines for notes where the page has room. Pick Letter or A4, then tap Print, Share PDF or Share CSV. The CSV has every tap: its time, the counter, +1 or -1, and the count after it. You can do the same for any past count: open it from Past counts.
What are the 15-minute report and the counter grid? (Pro)
The 15-minute report shows each counter quarter hour by quarter hour, with the busiest quarter hour named at the top of the page. It's made from the tap times every count already keeps, so it works on past counts too. You can print it or share it as a PDF or CSV. Find it on the Count sheet screen, next to Count sheet. The Counter grid lays many counters out as a grid of big squares, for things like age groups or vehicle types. Tap the grid button at the top to switch between the grid and tiles. Without Pro, the grid button opens the Tally Cat Pro screen, and the report shows a button that opens it.
Where are my counts kept? Do I need an account?
There's no account and no sign-up. Every tap is saved on your device as you make it, in the app's own folder. Nothing syncs between devices. Your counts leave the app only when you print or share them yourself.
Does it work offline?
Yes, for counting. Tally Cat has no account and makes no network request of its own. So you can count, undo, end a count, and make the PDF and CSV without a connection. Printing goes through the system print screen, so your printer has to be reachable. Sharing by email or to the cloud needs a connection. So does buying Pro, which goes through the App Store.
I bought Tally Cat Pro. How do I get it on a new iPhone or iPad?
Sign in with the same Apple Account you bought it with and open Tally Cat. An earlier purchase is picked up when the app opens. If Pro isn't on, tap the grid button to open the Tally Cat Pro screen and tap Restore purchase, under the Unlock button (at the largest text sizes it's at the top of the screen). Restoring needs a connection. Your counts don't move to the new device, because they're kept on the device where you made them.
