Overview
This policy covers the Plate Cat app, its widgets and its Add food control, made by IYIO ("we", "our", or "us"). On the App Store, Plate Cat's privacy label is "Data Not Collected".
- No account: there's no sign-in and nothing to register.
- No analytics, tracking or ads: the app has no third-party SDKs.
- No server of ours: the app sends nothing to us. It makes only the two requests below, and StoreKit talks to Apple for Pro.
Barcode Lookups, Only After You Say Yes
- Asked first: when a barcode you scan or type isn't already on your phone, the app asks "Look up <code> on Open Food Facts?" No request is made until you tap Look up. Your yes is remembered on your device, and Delete all my data forgets it.
- Only the barcode: the request goes to Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org) and carries only the barcode and a User-Agent naming the app: no cookies, no identifiers and none of your food log. Open Food Facts is a non-profit open database, and a barcode alone doesn't identify you.
- Kept for next time: the answer is saved on your device so the next scan of that barcode works offline. It is never sent anywhere.
- Search: searching the food list happens on your device. No search ever goes over the network.
More from the Cat Family
Settings › More from the Cat family asks Apple's public App Store lookup which Cat apps are available, sending only their app IDs and your store country. No food data and no identifiers.
Your Food Log
- On your device: log entries, your own foods, recipes and favourites are kept in the app's own storage, with iCloud sync off. They're part of your own device backups.
- Settings: only the daily target you typed, your yes to Open Food Facts lookups, and the Apple Health switch.
- Delete all my data: in Settings removes the log, your own foods, recipes, favourites, saved barcode foods, the Open Food Facts yes and your target.
- Export (Pro): a PDF diary or a CSV is made only when you tap Export, and handed to the system share sheet. Where it goes is your choice; the app sends nothing itself.
Camera
iOS asks before the camera is used, and only when you tap Use camera. The barcode is read on your device, and no image is kept or sent.
Apple Health (Pro, Off Until You Turn It On)
- Write only: when you turn on Write to Apple Health, iOS asks you to let Plate Cat write calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat. It asks to read nothing, and Plate Cat never reads your Health data.
- What it writes: each food you log afterwards adds those numbers, with the food's name, to Health on your device. That's Apple's Health store, not ours.
- Deleting: deleting a food, undoing a copy, or Delete all my data removes what Plate Cat wrote for it, even after the switch is off, as long as Health still lets Plate Cat write.
Widgets and the Add Food Control (Pro)
The app writes today's numbers (calories per meal, protein, carbs, fat, your target and whether Pro is on) to one small file in a folder only Plate Cat and its widgets can open. No food names go in it. The widgets only read that file and have no networking. The Add food control in Control Center just opens the app on Add food.
Plate Cat Pro
- Pro: an optional one-time in-app purchase through Apple's StoreKit. Apple processes the payment, the app reads its own purchase on your device, and we receive no purchase data.
Where the Numbers Come From
- USDA FoodData Central: the bundled food list comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's FoodData Central, which is in the public domain.
- Open Food Facts: barcode results: data © Open Food Facts contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL 1.0), openfoodfacts.org. Every such food says "From Open Food Facts" in the app, and no Open Food Facts images are used.
- Estimates: the numbers come from these sources and from labels you enter, so they are estimates. Settings › Where the numbers come from says so too.
