You sell things online, shoot weddings, or post your own photos, and you want your name on them before they go out. Doing it one photo at a time in an editor is slow, and you want the marked copy to stay full size. This guide covers what makes a good watermark, then shows how to put your name or logo on many photos at once with Convert Cat, our photo and PDF converter for iPhone and iPad.
What makes a good watermark
A watermark does its job when:
- It's readable but doesn't take over. Small, a little see-through, and in a corner or spread lightly across the photo.
- It looks the same on every photo, whether the photo is wide, tall, small or huge.
- The photo stays full size, so the copy you share isn't shrunk.
One honest note: a watermark puts your name on a photo. Like any watermark, it can still be cropped or edited out.
Add a watermark to photos, step by step
- Open Convert Cat. The first time, it asks "What are you making?": tap Watermarks ("Put your name or logo on many photos at once, full size."). The app opens straight into Watermarks from then on. To get back to the other jobs, tap the grid button at the top left.
- Tap Pick photos and choose as many as you like. There's no limit on how many go in one batch. Your photos line up in a strip under the preview, with a count such as "12 photos".
- Type your mark under Your mark, in the box that says "Your name, shop or @handle". The preview shows it on your photo as you type.
- Choose where it goes (see below), then set Size and Opacity with the sliders.
- Tap Save 12 photos (the button counts your batch). Each photo gets the mark at full size and is saved as a new copy in Photos. When it's done you'll see "Saved 12 photos" and "Full size, as new copies in Photos. Your originals are untouched."
Rather keep them in iCloud Drive or a folder? Tap the folder button next to the save button (VoiceOver reads it as Save to Files). The files are JPEGs named after your mark, such as "maya.makes 1.jpg", "maya.makes 2.jpg".
Saving to Photos asks only to add photos, so Convert Cat can save the copies without seeing the rest of your library. If that access is off, the app says "Photos is off for Convert Cat" and tells you where to turn it back on.
Placing the mark
Under Where there's a small pad of nine spots, like a little photo: tap one to put the mark in that corner, edge or the middle. It starts at the bottom right. You can also drag the mark with your finger on the preview; it stays inside the edges of the photo.
Under Pattern, turn on Tile across to repeat the mark over the whole photo, turned at an angle, instead of placing it once.
The mark is sized to each photo's shorter side, so it looks the same across a batch of mixed photos.
Changing the look
Under Look you can pick:
- A typeface: Rounded, Serif, Mono or Bold.
- A colour: white, black, cream or tomato.
- Shadow: on by default, so a white mark still reads on a bright sky.
Convert Cat remembers the last style you used, so the next batch looks the same without setting it up again.
Picked a photo by mistake? Touch and hold it in the strip and tap Take out of this batch. Clear empties the whole batch. Tap a photo in the strip to see the mark on that one in the preview.
What a saved copy keeps
Every saved copy is full size: the same width and height as the original, turned upright. It keeps the date the photo was taken, so it sorts next to the original in Photos. Location isn't included in saved copies, and neither is the camera serial number or other photo info. Your original stays in Photos exactly as it was.
The copies are saved as JPEG, even when the originals are iPhone photos (HEIC). For more on the two formats, see how to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone.
Full-size copies can be large. If a site or email won't take them, see how to reduce photo file size on iPhone.
What it costs
Watermarks is free: text marks with every placement, dragging and tiling, any number of photos in one batch, full-size saves to Photos and Files, and the last style remembered. There are no ads and no account.
Convert Cat Pro is an optional one-time unlock (the App Store shows the price). In Watermarks it adds three extras:
- Your logo as the mark: tap Logo next to Text under Your mark, then Choose logo. A PNG with a clear background works best, and the clear background is kept.
- Keep all photo info: a switch in Settings that keeps location, camera and the rest of the original's info in each copy.
- Named styles: tap Save this style, give it a name like Shop or Weddings, and switch to it in one tap.
You don't need Pro to watermark photos with your name. More on the Convert Cat page.
Quick answers
Can I watermark many photos at once?
Yes. Pick as many as you like; one tap saves them all with the same mark.
Will my photos lose quality?
They aren't scaled down. Each copy keeps the original's full width and height, saved as a JPEG at 95% quality.
Does it change my original photos?
No. The marked photos are new copies, and your originals stay as they were.
Can I use my logo instead of text?
Yes, with Convert Cat Pro. The logo uses the same placement, size, opacity, tile and shadow settings as text.
Does a watermark stop people from using my photos?
No. It puts your name on the photo, but like any watermark it can be cropped or edited out.
Do I need an account?
No. There's no account, and your photos are marked on your device. The marked copies go only where you save or share them.
