How to Make a Packing Slip on iPhone

Make a packing slip on your iPhone: list what's in the box and who it's for, add your shop's name and logo, then print it on a page or a 4 × 6 label.

The order is packed and taped, and the customer will open it wondering if everything's there. A packing slip answers that: a sheet in the box that lists what's inside and who it's for. This guide covers what usually goes on a packing slip, then how to make and print one with Invoice Cat, our invoice and estimate app for iPhone, which also has a Packing slips mode.

What goes on a packing slip

  • Your shop's name and logo, so the customer knows who it's from.
  • The order number and date, to match the slip to the order.
  • Ship to: the customer's name and address.
  • Each item and how many. One line per item, with the quantity.
  • A count of what's in the box, so a missing item is easy to spot.
  • A short note, if you like: a thank-you, or care instructions.

What's not on it: prices. As Invoice Cat puts it, "a packing slip says what's in the box, so it works for gifts too." What it cost goes on the receipt or the invoice.

Set up your shop once

  1. Open Invoice Cat. On What are you making?, tap Packing slips. The app remembers and opens there next time. (If you already have invoices saved, it opens on them: tap the grid button at the top left to get back to the choice.)
  2. Tap the gear for Settings. Under Your shop, type your shop's name and tap Add a logo to pick one from Photos. Both are "Printed at the top of every slip. Left empty, it's left off."
  3. Under Paper, pick a full page (Letter page or A4 page, depending on your region) or 4 × 6 label for a label printer. You can switch on any slip.
  4. Tap Done.

Make the slip

  1. Tap New packing slip at the bottom.
  2. Under What's in the box, type the first item. Use − and + to set how many. Tap Add an item for the next one, and swipe a line to remove it. Items you've typed on earlier slips show up as buttons under the list: tap one to fill a line.
  3. Under Ship to, type the customer's Name and Address. The address can take as many lines as it needs.
  4. Add an Order number and A note for them if you want. Both are optional: "Both print on the slip. Left empty, they're left off."
  5. Tap Save. You need at least one item to save.
  6. Tap the slip in the list to see it as it will print.

The slip opens as a preview on the paper you picked, with a Paper switch at the top if this box needs the other size.

  • Print opens your iPhone's print panel, so you can pick your printer.
  • PDF opens the share sheet with the slip as a PDF named after the customer, like "Packing slip – Dana Whitfield", to save to Files or send on.

Here's what prints, top to bottom: your logo and shop name, the words PACKING SLIP, the order number and the date, the SHIP TO block, a QTY and ITEM table, a line like "3 items in this box", and your note in a shaded box. Apart from the date, only what you typed reaches the paper: an empty field is left off, never filled with an example. A long list carries on to another page, which starts with "Packing slip, continued" and the order number and name, so a loose sheet still says whose box it belongs to.

The same box for someone else

Selling the same bundle to several people? Open a slip, tap the ⋯ button and choose Same box, someone else. It starts a new slip with the same items and note, and a blank name, address and order number. Edit and Delete are in the same menu.

To find an old slip, pull down on the list and search by Name, order or item. The list shows each slip's item count, who it's for, what's in it and when you made it.

When it's time to bill, the Invoices & estimates mode is one tap away on What are you making?: see how to make an invoice on iPhone.

What it costs

Packing slips are free, all of it: any number of slips, your name and logo, both paper sizes, Print and the PDF. There's no watermark: nothing of ours prints on the slip. There are no ads, no account and no sign-up. Invoice Cat Pro is an optional one-time purchase, one Pro for every mode, and its extras are for invoices, order forms and job sheets; there's nothing in Packing slips to unlock. Quick answers

Does a packing slip show prices?
Not in Invoice Cat. A slip lists the quantity and item only, so it works for gifts too.

What's the difference between a packing slip and an invoice?
A packing slip says what's in the box. An invoice says what the customer owes. Invoice Cat makes both, in different modes.

Can I print packing slips on a 4 × 6 label printer?
Yes. Pick 4 × 6 label under Paper. Printing goes through your iPhone's print panel, so your printer needs to show up there.

Where are my customers' addresses kept?
"No account. Every slip, address and logo is kept on your device and in your own backups unless you share it." Same box, someone else never copies the address.
